Drapery Care
Draperies collect more dirt than you realize. They trap and hold smoke and heating fumes, oil, dust, lint pollen and bacteria that float freely in the air. Research shows that dust actually has sharp edges that can gradually cut fabric fibres. Vaccum your drapes monthly to remove surface dirt.
Drapery fabric also can be damaged by improper opening and closing. Check drapery rods and cords to make sure they function properly. And, never pull on draperies to open and close them.
Draperies are exposed to the harsh effects of both direct and indirect light.Florida's harsh sun is even tougher on draperies than anywhere else in the country. While there is no way to prevent light damage, it can be reduced by having a good lining and if possible, by rotating the drapes to minimize their exposure.
After years of exposure, drapery fibres may become weakend. They may also yellow with age due primarily to build-up of oils. This takes place gradually, so it usually isn't noticed. During dry cleaning, the oils are removed, thus accentuating the yellowing. This discoloration cannot be removed, so it's important to minimize the natural aging process by regularly cleaning. Aarons CleanRx recommends draperies be professionally cleaned every 18-24 months.
